HEARTBURN 101

There are three primary culprits for the occasional heartburn to arise.
A poor intake, stress and exercise.

 DIET

Alcohol, Onions, Carbonated Drinks, Coffee, Spicy foods, Citrus (Grapefruit) Tomatoes are just some of the main triggers of heartburn. Tomatoes

Many of the foods we eat daily, are recognized by doctors as triggers for heartburn. Heartburn can also be related to pairing the wrong foods together, eating too fast or too late at night. You can see more on the food pairings in the AxiaBliss Intake e-book. The list of individual food and beverages most commonly known relating to heartburn are as follows. The body being unable to absorb and digest foods can also be a challenge.
Tomatoes and foods containing tomato products are a frequent cause of heartburn. These types of foods are highly acidic and cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, which allows stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus.

Chocolate is also a contributor to acid reflux. Due to the high fat content and the caffeine that is present in most types of chocolate, this food can cause stomach acid to leak into the esophagus.
Carbonated drinks such as soda cause heartburn by causing the stomach to become distended and have gas.

This occurs as the carbonated bubbles enlarge inside the stomach and create pressure on the esophageal sphincter.

Drinking alcoholic beverages in excess can also result in heartburn. While the majority of drinks containing alcohol have a low acidity, they cause the lower esophageal muscle to relax, which causes the release of stomach contents into the esophagus. Alcoholic beverages can also increase the amount of acid that is produced by the stomach.

Due to their high acidic content, citrus fruits such as grapefruits and oranges should be avoided in individuals who experience frequent heartburn. Foods that contain acids will increase the amount of gastric acid that is found in the stomach.

Foods that are fried and high in bad fat cause heartburn by prolonging the digestion process, which allows these types of foods to stay in the stomach longer than normal. After these types of foods are consumed, pressure is placed on the stomach and the lower esophageal sphincter, which causes the reflux of acids. Also, many fried foods are breaded and contain wheat or gluten which is a more difficult grain to digest.
Most types of spicy Mexican food, chili, salsa and foods containing pepper can worsen acid reflux. These types of foods can cause irritation of the stomach lining, which generates an increase in the amount of stomach acid that is produced.

While many people may believe that peppermint can relieve heartburn, it can actually trigger acid reflux. Peppermint and other types of mints cause the esophageal sphincter to relax, which causes heartburn by allowing acid to flow back into the esophagus.
Foods that are prepared with garlic can also cause heartburn. Foods containing garlic can irritate the stomach and cause an increase in the amount of gastric acid that is produced.

STRESS

The more stressed we are, the more likely we are to suffer from heartburn associated with acid reflux disease. Stress can lead to smoking, over-eating and excessive alcohol intake. Many people try to comfort themselves by eating fried, fatty, or spicy foods. Some people smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, and stress is often used as an excuse for not exercising.
Stress will create an acidic environment where viruses thrive. Our bodies are designed to handle intermittent stress, not chronic stress. Finding ways to counter balance your life and take you out of those constant stress situations is important.  EXERCISE

Exercise can cause heartburn in some people as well.  Many times when you experience occasional heartburn you will get heartburn when you workout.  If you consume coffee, take supplements or eat something that triggers your acidity levels to rise the stomach acid either bounces up into the esophagus while running.  Many long distance runners take an Axia antacid before running to stay more alkaline and help provide a barrier between the esophagus and the acid, thus neutralizing any acid that would cause the heartburn symptoms.  This is so common it has its own name, EAGER, Exertion Associated Gastroesophoageal Reflux.

Swimming, lifting weights, biking and sit-ups are some of the other common activities that cause heartburn.  One may be more prone to getting heartburn while swimming because it is easier for the acid to creep up into the esophagus.  Tip of the day…Take an Axia3 antacid before jumping in the pool and watch how this problem goes away.  Lifting weights and sit-ups can put stress on the stomach forcing antacid into the esophagus triggering heartburn pain.  Biking is known to cause heartburn due to the bent over position, in conjunction with stomach compression, potentially forcing acid into the esophagus as well.
